Aside from its characters and bosses, there are some things that are more fearsome in World of Warcraft overall, and that is, the incredible array of powerful, legendary weapons. As with most made-up universes, in Azeroth, you'll find a plethora of powerful beings, weapons, artefacts and armour, all of which can be put on your own hero, once you slay the creature that possesses them, of course.
If this is sort of a gig with most open-world games, World of Warcraft takes everything one step further. In WoW, you can actually fight and take on most of the legendary items that the stories about the game talk about in whispers. Incredible swords, destructive maces, warglaves that only one villain can hold, players like you and me can loot them, after defeating the holders of these rare items. Blizzard has managed to create some of the most famous, notorious, and powerful fictional weapons the entire gaming industry has ever seen.
Why Is World Of Warcraft So Popular
Never in the history of gaming has there been a game like World of Warcraft. The spectacular game with origins in a normal RPG, Warcraft, is still one of the most played games ever made for the online, 20 years after its launch. It's not entirely up to these items but, for the most part, the wanting and craving of gamers who're dreaming to one day loot a dragon-forged blade or a soul-eating sword is part of the reason why the game is still so popular with all types of gamers.
World of Warcraft is an MMORPG, an online game that can be played with friends or alone, in which you grow a character from zero to cap level and then equip them with the best armour and items you can forge or loot. You can either make your own items, if you take on a profession, or have them drop from NPCs and bosses through raids and dungeons, or arena points. While the first is fun and rewarding, it will only get you so far. For the really good stuff, you will go to the dungeons. That's where the really rare, legendary artefacts reside.
10 Most Powerful WoW Weapons
Now that we know a tad more about this legendary game, let’s look into the top ten weapons in World of Warcraft. With the sad mention that, as far as looting these items, not all of them are available to players. That’s what makes them even more legendary, and unique, after all.
Frostmourne - Even games like World of Warcraft have their instantly recognizable items, those items that are a hit with all gamers new and old. Frostmourne, the sword of the Lich King, is that item for WoW. It is THE item, THE weapon of weapons. Besides the huge power that the sword has, the Frostmourne can literally pull out the memories, as well as the skills of its victims. If you do get your hands on the sword, your soul will slowly drift towards the notorious Lich King.
The story goes that, when Arthas got his hands on the Helm of Domination, along with the sword, he turned into the Lich King. Because of this legendary item, he became the most powerful character of the Warth of the Lich King expansion. Killing Arthas at the end of the Icecrown Citadel raid used to give players a rare chance of putting their hands on this surreal item, but not anymore.
Ashbringer - While Frostmourne has such a dark background story, Ashbringer is sort of the antithesis of the first. The Ashbringer, wielded by a Highlord of the Silver Hand, is said to contain the very Essence of Light in it. This makes the Ashbringer into the perfect enemy for the undead, which is just crumbling to ashes when they merely sense this epic weapon. The Ashbringer was "dark" for a good period of time, falling in the wrong hands, but Tirion Fordring, the current wielder, made it into a holy item once more.
Many are the speculations about the holy crystal of this weapon. Some even say that the holy rock is of alien nature, or an ancient being with pure energy in it. No matter what the truth is, the Ashbringer is incredibly powerful, as it is the one weapon that destroyed Frostmourne, and ultimately killed Arthas. This item unfortunately is not a drop for players.
Shadowmourne - Right before the confrontation of Tirion with Arthas, the Death Knights of the Ebon Guard are unsure if the Ashbringer is really capable of being as powerful as Frostmourne. Darion, another lore legend, told the story of how a blade coming from evil itself will soon enough match the capabilities of the deadliest of all swords, being able to destroy Arthas once and for all. So was the quest of creating Shadowmourne created, but sure enough, this was no ordinary quest for your average WoW player.
In order to forge Shadowmourne, you have to get your hands on some pretty rare items, such as the Light's Vengeance, the hammer Arthas used before Frostmourne, saronite, blood from the Old Gods, and many more. The blade has to have some fragments of the actual Frozen Throne on it, in order to be functional. Once created, Shadowmourne is capable of sucking the souls of enemies, which can later be used to attack the same targets.
Doomhammer - It is a good weapon, the Doomhammer, despite its evil name. Forged by the Orcs, this item is the embodiment of bringing doom and destruction to enemies, especially when the honour of the wielder is put to the test. Oh boy, you don't want to be facing this weapon when that happens! When the Orcs fell in the Burning Legion, creating the Doomhammer was their way to redeem themselves.
Made with the elemental lava of Draenor, the Doomhammer has many unique elements that give it its huge powers. The wielder can literally talk with the elements surrounding him, and so the Doomhammer is empowered by them, offering magic responses to any attack. Although the hilts of the hammer were replaced many times, the head is still unique. The hammer is available as an artefact after the Legion expansion.
Scepter Of Sargeras - Sargeras is the most dangerous being in the lore, as many would say. Being a Titan, Sargeras wanted to kill everyone so that he'll remain forever uncorrupted. Turning dark, this character who wanted to take all life out of Azeroth, had to confront the prophecy, which surely was against his plans. Trying to invade Azeroth, Sargeras could not get his essence into the lands fast enough so that his plan could work.
His men forged him an item so powerful, it has the capability of travel between the two worlds, the real and the underworld. This became the notorious Scepter of Sargeras. The main utility of the scepter is to let Sargeras travel between the two worlds, being the item that's directly linked to the spacetime element of the game. The bearer of the scepter is capable of travelling long distances, and the legend has it, can even summon parts of Sargeras himself.
Gorshalach - As a Titan Pantheon server, Sargeras has managed to create his own weapon before the Specter. The blade was called Gorshalach, and has been named the strongest weapon of the game many times. When he turned into a Dark Titan, Sargeras discovered that the powerful blade has turned itself into two, making it impossible for the new villain to put it back together. The two parts of the original weapons now reside with Gorribal the dark and Aggramar the light, both of which cannot ever fight as they'd just make one another vanish.
Thas'dorah - Out of all of the High Elves in Azeroth, the most powerful and famous of them all are the Windrunners, when it comes to the masterful art of archery. It's no wonder then that they own and control the most powerful bow in the game, the legendary Thas'dorah, one of the most representative items of their legacy. More than that, the eldest child of any generation of Wildrunners will get to handle this mysterious, mythical crossbow. The current owner of the Thas'dorah is Alleria, a Void Elf. One important aspect of the epic weapon is that it is not just a bow. The item has magical powers that are summoned by the wielder. In return, the empowered character can turn any beginner of archery into a master in an instant.
Seschenal - Out of the many World of Warcraft weapons that you can get, this one is the most sought-after. Eonar the Titan wielded this item herself. This makes the Seschenal a representative item in the patronage of Eonar, making it easier for her to control everything around the world, including life and nature. This is why Eonar is also known as the Life-Binder, using the Seschenal for somewhat malicious means.
When it comes to looks, the staff appears to be made out of alabaster, with flowers and veins of sprouts rounding it. It almost looks like a living tree, if you look at it the right way. Although this is not a legendary WoW weapon, the Seschenal helps the heroes in the battle of the Argus of Legion. In this particular raid, Eonar uses the Seschenal to heal and restore the hope that the heroes have lost. The staff is so capable, it can even bring back the dead.
Felo'melorn - Also known as Flamestrike in the lore and among players, the legendary Felo'melorn is the runeblade that counters the famous Frostmourne in terms of not power but theme. The epic weapon is part of the lore of Sunstriders, who've passed the Felo'melorn from one generation to the other until our present days. Felo'melorn got defeated by the Frostmourne the first time the two weapons got into a fight. Yet the powerful Kael'thas the Sunstrider reforged the epic blade, adding hate and a desire for revenge.
Because of this "divine intervention", the Felo'melorn got more attached to the element of fire, which greatly enhanced its powers. A magical blade, the Felo'melorn is made for those who specialise in handling fire and heat, overpowering all magical flames in the lore. Yet the real secret of this epic blade is in the reforging, meaning that, the more it gets remade, the more powerful it gets. Deflecting the attacks of the unbeatable Frostmourne became possible.
Warglaives of Azzinoth - Also known as the Blades of Azzinoth, these two blades are the reason why millions of players started playing WoW at the surreal boom in popularity that the game received after releasing its first expansion. When the Burning Crusade was released, millions from all over the globe started playing the game, eager to defeat the last boss of the Black Temple raid, Illidan, in order to get their hands on the legendary item.
Now, the blades are still available for gamers to come by, if they choose to play the Classic version of the game, which has just reached the Burning Crusade expansion. This is different from the actual game, which is now at its eighth expansion, Shadowlands, released back in 2020. In order to get the blades, legendary and very good looking on the backs of any rogues or warriors, you have to defeat Illidan and get lucky enough to loot them in your group.
How To Level Up Your Hero Faster
If you want to take your World of Warcraft gaming to the next level, and level up faster through the first part of the game, one important thing is timing. Make sure you’re visiting your server when there are a few people on it as possible, to avoid looting issues. Another thing to consider is doing it with a friend, as there’s more questing to be covered faster when you’re doing it in pairs. Third, remember to take care of the other aspects of the game, such as taking up a profession, to ensure the timeline is not just quest-based.
