What Makes A Great Release

A great release starts with anticipation. The longer you wait for a new game in a series, or a completely new first-time release, the more you want it. Gaming companies do know this and, although not often, they do sometimes prolong the release date so to create even more anticipation for the awaiting fans. When the game comes out everybody then wants a copy.

Another important factor to consider is timing. What is the best period or date to release the you-name-it game? Many developers pick the end of the year for this because it’s the holiday season. And yes, people spend a lot more during the holidays than during the rest of the year. Not just on gifts but also on things they’ve wanted to try for months. Like a new, amazing game.

Ten 2022 Holiday Season Games

Now that we cleared the facts about what makes a great release, and why people wait for games for years at the time, let us dive into the matter at hand. These are the top 10 most expected games for the 2022 winter season. There are games for everyone, including racers, RPGs, sports and strategy, as well as some long-awaited expansions for one or two!

Terracotta - There is something that sits in the darkness right in the mausoleum. A figurine made out of terracotta slowly cracks as the soul trapped inside comes out, awakened by the Tao energy. You are the figurine that comes back to life, along with your comrades made out of the same legendary material. After a curse was placed over your army and the emperor, you have to save yourself, and lift the magic of evil to once again bring peace to the empire. Based on the notorious Qin dynasty of China, Terracotta is an action-adventure like very few others. Coming on November 2nd, the game is made around the 15-year rule of the first dynasty of China, laying the foundations of the state that is still one of the greatest in history even now, 2 millennia later. Combining drama and power, the game allows you to transform China into a great superpower, as the empire takes shape under your command.

God of War Ragnarok - November 9th is the release date of this particular title. When they struggle with letting go and holding on, Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey you should be a part of. Santa Monica Studio prepares the sequel to the 2018 hit God of War. The game is well underway, and the two protagonists are about to join the Nine Realms in order to look for answers as Asgardian forces get ready for the battle of the prophecy, the one that will end the world. Until then, the main characters will get to explore incredible landscapes of mythical proportions, as they face notorious enemies such as monsters and even Norse gods. Ultimately, they will have to face Ragnarok, and there's no other way to do this but straight on!

Valkyrie Elysium - This particular title is coming to your PlayStation device on November 11th. Speaking of Ragnarok, this is another game that has something to do with the famous character. Ragnarok is the End Times, and as he loomed on the realms, Odin, with the last of his powers, created Valkyrie in order to somehow save the doomed planet. In "Elysium", she has to defend the world and save everyone from certain doom by using the powers of the realms. This RPG comes with the signature Einherjar system, allowing for 3D combat that's exciting and fast. The art chosen for the game is unique and just beautiful, a great incentive for newcomers and veterans to try the second title of the series.

Goat Simulator 3 - Pilgor is a goat that has been personified into a game character. It was so successful that they're now ready to launch the 3rd title of the series. Gather your herd and venture into the new, realistic, sandbox farmyard game everyone raves about for months. Coming out on November 17th, Goat Simulator 3 will start you out as the same female protagonist nobody has ever expected from the gaming industry. Well, surprise! The baaa has been said, and Pilgor is going to be with her herd now. Up to three friends are now able to play locally or online at the same time, making a carnage as a team, competing in mini-games or doing anything else they might desire.

Pokemon Scarlet&Violet - Scarlet and Violet are two different games that are about to be released on the same November 18th as they're quite similar but with some differences. The games are developed by Game Freak and will be published on the Nintendo Switch by the Pokemon Company and Nintendo. The duo has been announced in February of this year, and fans are craving some new exploring and monsters to put in their pokeballs. You can roam free and explore Paldea with your familiar and new pokemon. You can do it your way in this world. Besides the common ground, there will be some differences between the two games, such as exclusive pokemon and some outfits.

World of Warcraft Dragonflight - Every single World of Warcraft fan, a breed of their own basically, has set their calendars for the big date of November 28th. This is when something significant is about to happen to their beloved game. Namely, dragons. Yes, dragons. World of Warcraft is getting dragons. And although many have criticized this move by Blizzard, many others see it as a paw forward. Or step. Or whatever dragons have instead of feet. Dragonflight comes with a new race-and-class combo, a first for the game, the Dracthyr Evoker, and the new Dragon Isles zone. With a set of flying components that are new and predominant for the upcoming race-class, Dragonflight promises to rekindle the magic of the World of Warcraft that millions worldwide once loved. And still do, but in considerably lower numbers.

Warhammer 40.000: Darktide - After years of nothingness, the people behind the famous Warhammer 40.000 universe have finally set a date for the new episode of the series. It is called Darktide, and is set to release on November 20th for Windows computers and shortly after on the Xbox. A different game from the previous Vermintide, Darktide will focus on a four-player collaboration that will put you and three other friends in front of AI-controlled enemies. Battling and defeating them is your main goal. You will have multiple missions happening at the same time unlike in the previous games, which will largely enhance the experience and give players more chances at spectacular loot than with a single mission. You make progress when you get your hands on the rewards, as well as in-game currency which allows you to buy weapons and so on. There is also a contract system that will earn you the weapons you desire. Havoc, this new Warhammer 40.000 is havoc. We cannot wait for it!

Need For Speed Unbound - With more than 140 cars to customize and collect, the new NFS is up for grabs starting November 29th. And the internet is raving about it just like with any other Need For Speed release from the past. Unbound will be available on the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S starting December 2nd. EA has even confirmed 3 extra cars from the initial 140. Vehicles will be a mixture of racing cars and modern supercars so that everybody has a chance to shine and race just like they want to. The game will have a strong focus on multiplayer, as fans of the series want to be able to race online, not just locally as with most other titles of the franchise.

Marvel's Midnight Suns - Coming towards your all devices on December 2nd, this Marvel production features some of the most famous heroes of our times in a different setting. This is a crossover with a fabulous story, relationships between characters, loads of customizations and the progression any good RPG should come with. But... what is it, more precisely? Midnight Suns is the ultimate combo of events and actions happening in the darker side of the Marvel world. Setting bonds with the legendary superheroes of the franchise, you will meet dangerous warriors with supernatural powers and fight to stop Chthon and Lilith from destroying the planet. You will play the Hunter, the very first fully customizable Marvel hero that you can make into whatever you wish. Endless wonder!

High on Life - Ending this list with a game that's high... on life! This production comes from the mind of Justin Roiland, the creator of Rick and Morty, and it is supposedly a comedy sci-fi shooter in which characters AND their weapons are able to talk. Imagine your AK-47 talking back to you when you're focusing on head-shooting the terrorists in Dust 2! Looking incredible from the trailers, High on Life will be an exclusive for the Xbox Series X|S owners, the perfect chill but fun and exciting game for this holiday season. High on Life comes out on December 13th, just in time for the Christmas break.
